Professor-Dr Vasant Matsagar is currently serving as Professor and Dogra Chair in Structural Engineering in the Department of Civil Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi. He obtained his doctorate (PhD) degree from IIT Bombay in 2005 in the area of earthquake engineering for his PhD Thesis titled "Earthquake Behavior and Impact Response Control of Base-Isolated Buildings" for which he has been honored with the "IIT Bombay Research Paper Award". He performed post-doctoral research in the area of application of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites in prestressed concrete bridge structures at the Lawrence Technological University (LTU), Michigan in the USA.
Professor Matsagar's current research interests include multi-hazard engineering; multi-hazard protection of structures from earthquake, blast, fire, and wind; structural dynamics and vibration control; finite element methods; fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites in prestressed concrete structures; and bridge engineering. Related to these research areas, he has completed number of sponsored research projects with national and international collaboration. He has developed innovative technologies in these areas some of which are copyrighted and patented, and he has been actively engaged in field implementation of these technologies inreal-life construction projects in India. He has published more than hundred international journal papers, other hundreds of international conference manuscripts, two books, eight edited proceedings, has two patents and one copyright; thereby, he is enlisted in the world’s top 2% scientists. These research contributions have duly complemented in his teaching, enriching teaching-and-learning experience aptly. He has guided several students at both undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) levels in their bachelors and masters projects and doctoral research. Besides UG and PG student guidance, he is actively engaged in sponsored research and consultancy projects at national and international levels.
Professor Matsagar is the recipient of numerous national and international recognitions including: "Fulbright-Kalam Climate Fellowship for Academic and Professional Excellence"; "Humboldt Research Fellowship for Experienced Researchers"; "Carl Friedrich von Siemens Research Award"; "Erasmus Mundus Award"; "Erasmus+ Higher Education KA107 Fellowships"; "FEIT Visiting Academic Fellowship"; "DST Young Scientist Award"; "DAAD Research Ambassador and DAAD Awards"; "DAE Young Scientist Award"; "IBC Award for Excellence in Built-Environment"; "IEI Young Engineer Award"; "IIT Delhi Teaching Excellence Award"; "IIT Delhi Outstanding Young Faculty Fellow"; "Young Professional Award"; etc. He has served as member on the National Building Code (NBC) of India and is currently serving on code-development committees in the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Indian Roads Congress (IRC), and International Standards Organization (ISO). He is National Coordinator for Civil Engineering and allied subjects in the Swayam Prabha DTH Channel. Currently, he is serving as a core member of Program Advisory Committee (PAC) - Civil, Infrastructure, and Transportation Engineering of the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB).
Currently, he is serving as Editor-in-Chief of the Indian Society of Earthquake Technology (ISET) Journal and the Indian Concrete Journal (ICJ). He is Associate Editor for the Computational Methods in Structural Engineering Section in Frontiers in Built Environment. Moreover, he is an editorial board member of the Bulletin of the New Zealand Society for Earthquake Engineering (BNZSEE), Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) - Structures and Buildings, Advances in Civil Engineering, International of Protective Structures (IJPS), and Journal on Architecture, Structures, and Construction; Guest Editor of journals namely, Institution of Engineers India (Series A), Shock and Vibration, Frontiers in Built Environment, Journal of Low Frequency Noise, Vibration, and Active Control, etc.; and served as Responsible Editor of the Earthquake Spectra journal.
Professor Matsagar is Founding Director and Fellow of the Council of Vibration Specialists (CVS), he has received several fellowships such as that from Humboldt Foundation, Erasmus, ASEM-DUO India, and he is also an elected fellow of the Indian National Academy for Engineering (F-NAE), Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (F-CDRI), Institution of Engineers (India) (F-IEI), and Indian Society of Earthquake Technology (F-ISET).
