Safe and Resilient Water Supply for Western Cities in Sri Lanka

Implementing Partner: United Nations Human Settlement Programme (UN-HABITAT)

Project name: Safe and Resilient Water Supply for Western Cities – Integrating Climate Resilience into Water Safety Plans of the Ambatale Water Supply Scheme in Sri Lanka (Colombo, Kotte, Kelaniya)

This project enhances the capacity of urban local bodies in three Sri Lankan cities to implement data-driven, risk-informed catchment improvement planning and management for climate and disaster resilient water infrastructure, with a particular focus on improving water quality.

By utilizing real-time early warning systems and conducting assessments of catchment areas, the project aims to reduce water contamination risks caused by climate-induced hydrological and chemical changes, ultimately safeguarding lives.

Impact

1

Approximately 2.2 million residents across three cities, including women, children, the elderly, and persons with disabilities, will benefit from safe drinking water infrastructure. This includes residents at low-income settlements who will gain access to reliable water services.

2

Approximately 100 staff members from the national and three local governments will be technically empowered with data-driven, risk-informed planning for water infrastructure, ensuring the availability of high-quality water for citizens during floods and droughts.

3

An additional $3.5 million has been mobilized through bilateral and multilateral institutions to support resilient catchment improvement and management plans. Additionally, $60,000 will be leveraged from banks in collaboration with the National Water and Drainage Board.
