Revision of National Building Code in Haiti

Implementing Partner: Build Change

Project name: Revision of the Haitian National Building Code

This project seeks to revise and modernize the Haitian Building Code to address the country’s diverse hazard profile while incorporating provisions for existing housing, particularly small, vernacular, and timber-frame structures.

The revision process will include cyclone-resistant construction and retrofitting guidelines, prioritizing cost-effective, locally sourced solutions developed collaboratively with the private sector.

To ensure successful implementation, a comprehensive national training and awareness campaign will equip construction professionals and homeowners with the knowledge and skills to apply the updated codes.

Impact

1

The revised codes, incorporating cyclonic specifications for the first time, will significantly improve the resilience of buildings, enabling them to better withstand strong winds and minimize structural damage during cyclones.

2

The updated guidelines will extend their reach to timber-frame and rural structures, providing safer housing for families in informal and underserved areas that were previously excluded from formal construction standards.

3

Incorporating cost-effective and locally available solutions ensures practical and accessible implementation, fostering long-term resilience and sustainability within the built environment. A participatory approach, engaging government, private sector, and civil society, will encourage widespread adoption and effective implementation.
