Sustainable, Climate Resilient Water Supply in Northern Mauritius

Implementing Partner: United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)

Project name: Ensuring a sustainable and resilient water supply by developing a Mathematical Modelling in the Northern Aquifer of Mauritius

The project will evaluate the potential of the Northern Aquifer, which supplies 50–60% of domestic water, to meet growing demand across domestic, irrigation, and industrial sectors.

It will promote the sustainable management of groundwater resources in the short, medium, and long term, ensuring reliable water access and business continuity for key economic sectors.

A mathematical model of the aquifer will be developed as a decision-support tool, enhancing water security, sanitation, food systems, and health outcomes.

Impact

1

The mathematical model of the Northern Aquifer developed by the project will support strategic infrastructure planning and the implementation of a sustainable groundwater management plan, accounting for seawater intrusion risks and long-term climate resilience.

2

Technical staff from the Water Resources Unit (WRU) will receive training in groundwater modelling, strengthening institutional capacity for scenario analysis under climatic and non-climatic stressors, and enabling informed, climate-resilient water resource planning.

3

The project will assess additional groundwater extraction potential and explore alternatives such as desalination and rainwater harvesting, benefiting 250,000 people in northern Mauritius while bolstering food security, public health, tourism, and economic growth.
