GIS-Based Landslide Susceptibility Mapping in Afghanistan

Implementing Partner: Build Change

Project name: GIS-Based Landslide Susceptibility Mapping in Afghanistan

This project applied the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method to assess landslide susceptibility in Bamyan province, Afghanistan.

The region’s mountainous terrain, climate, seismic activity, and geological characteristics make it highly vulnerable to landslides, causing severe social and economic losses annually.

By identifying high-risk areas, this study enhances disaster preparedness and risk-reduction strategies, supporting more effective land-use planning and risk reduction efforts to safeguard lives, infrastructure, and economic stability in the region.

Impact and Key Findings

1

The landslide susceptibility map pinpointed high and very high-risk zones, covering over 61% of Bamyan. These insights help prioritize vulnerable areas, enabling targeted strategies to reduce disaster impacts and enhance community resilience against future landslide risks.

2

Key factors such as lithology, drainage, and slope were identified, providing crucial insights into landslide causes. These findings equip planners and engineers with the knowledge needed to develop targeted prevention and risk reduction strategies, enhancing risk reduction efforts.

3

The research equips decision-makers with a practical tool for rapid, informed planning, enabling them to identify high-risk zones and implement targeted risk reduction strategies to reduce damage, protect lives, and safeguard property from landslide hazards effectively.
