EcoShield: Nature-Based Coastal Resilience for Mauritius
EcoShield: Nature-Based Coastal Resilience for Mauritius
Implementing Partner: Build Change
Project name: EcoShield: Coastal Vulnerability Assessment and Nature-Based Resilience Pathways for Mauritius
The EcoShield project strengthens coastal resilience in Mauritius through a Coastal Vulnerability Index, harnessing GIS data on sea level rise, shoreline change, and local conditions.
By applying Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis, it pinpoints priority sites for Nature-Based Solutions, like mangrove restoration.
It also delivers strategic policy recommendations to embed NbS into national adaptation plans, promoting sustainable infrastructure while protecting fragile coastal ecosystems from escalating climate-driven risks.

Impact and Key Findings
1
Mapping coastal vulnerability hotspots in Mauritius enables targeted resilience planning, bolsters disaster response, and streamlines resource allocation to safeguard high-risk zones from escalating climate hazards, notably sea-level rise and associated environmental threats.
2
Mangrove restoration and nature-based solutions mitigate shoreline erosion, boost biodiversity, buffer storm surges, and offer communities sustainable, cost-effective defences against climate change impacts and coastal degradation, supporting long-term ecological and social resilience.
3
Integrating scientific evidence with community insights informs national policies for sustainable coastal management, ensuring climate adaptation strategies are both ecologically sound and socially responsive to the needs of vulnerable populations in at-risk coastal regions.
