Disaster Resilient Building Construction Practices in Bhutan

Implementing Partner: Build Change

Project name: Disaster Resilient Building Construction Practices in Bhutan

This project promotes safer building practices for disaster-resistant construction on Bhutan’s hilly slopes.

A detailed study identified unplanned development and intense rainfall as key drivers of urban landslides, significantly increasing risk. Landslides threaten lives, property, and critical infrastructure, underscoring the need for improved construction standards.

The findings emphasize proactive risk management, advocating for resilient urban planning, stricter regulations, and adaptive engineering solutions to safeguard communities against escalating landslide hazards in vulnerable regions.

Impact and Key Findings

1

Comprehensive soil and terrain analysis collected slope and subsurface data through field tests and surveys, providing critical insights into landslide hazards. These findings guide safer construction practices, improving resilience and stability in vulnerable hillside developments.

2

Collected field data informed landslide risk assessments, identifying unstable areas and defining safe construction limits. These insights help planners and builders implement risk-reduction measures, ensuring safer development and minimizing landslide-related damage in vulnerable regions.

3

The study presented risk reduction strategies and sustainable construction measures to promote safer hillside development. Its findings enhance public awareness and inform policy-making, fostering effective landslide risk management and resilience in vulnerable terrain.
