Quantifying Coastal Subsidence from Groundwater Extraction Impacts

Implementing Partner: Build Change

Project name: Assessing Coastal Infrastructure Resilience to Groundwater Extraction: Quantifying Subsidence Risks through 3D Groundwater Modelling

This project explores the impact of unregulated groundwater extraction on land subsidence in Ghana’s Tema coastal corridor, placing key infrastructure, such as Tema Port and Sakumono Sea Defence, at risk.

By integrating 3D groundwater modelling, satellite imagery, and ground-based data, it identifies high-risk zones near vital assets.

The results support strategic planning for infrastructure resilience and promote sustainable groundwater governance in rapidly urbanizing coastal environments.

Impact and Key Findings

1

The study integrates groundwater modelling with satellite and field data to pinpoint subsidence-prone zones in Tema’s coastal region, enabling strategic infrastructure planning and safeguarding critical assets from long-term geological and environmental threats.

2

The project identifies subsidence-prone zones that threaten ports and sea defences, guiding informed investment decisions to protect critical infrastructure and prevent long-term damage in coastal regions vulnerable to groundwater-driven land sinking.

3

The project promotes sustainable groundwater management through data-driven insights and inclusive stakeholder collaboration, enhancing long-term water security and supporting climate-resilient development across Ghana’s vulnerable coastal regions facing increasing environmental and resource pressures.
