CDRI Engagements at G20

India’s G20 Presidency has invited CDRI to participate as a guest International Organization  in the Sherpa, Finance and Central Bank Deputies meetings (FCBD) and Ministerial meetings as well  as in four G20 Working Groups: Infrastructure, Sustainable Finance, Disaster Risk Reduction, and Environment and Climate Sustainability.   CDRI’s contribution in G20 Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group is focused on the resilient infrastructure priority. CDRI is a knowledge partner to the DRR Working Group. 

The 5 key priorities of the G20 DRRWG are:  

  • Global Coverage of Early Warning Systems
  • Disaster and Climate Resilient Infrastructure
  • Financing Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction
  • Disaster Response System
  • Ecosystem-based Approach to DRR

1st Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group Meeting, Gandhinagar, 30 March – 1 April 2023

CDRI organized a side event at the 1st DRRWG meeting ‘Disaster Resilient Infrastructure: Insights for the G20” on 31 March 2023.

The side event convened sector experts to discuss the evolving landscape of disaster risk and infrastructure resilience and its implications for G20 nations. The discussions emphasized the importance of equitable and informed investments in infrastructure, driven by a nuanced understanding of gender impacts of infrastructure decisions.

2nd Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group Meeting, Mumbai, 23 – 25 March 2023

CDRI participated in the side event on ‘Financing Disk Risk Reduction’ and organized two side events:  

  • Infrastructure Risk Assessment Tools and Data Platforms 
  •  Financing Risk Prevention: Round Table with Private Sectors on Financing Disaster Risk Reduction  

The side event “Infrastructure Risk Assessment Tools and Data Platforms” organized on 24 March highlighted the current state of development, the data and information needs, emerging innovations which are taking place in the area of risk information and challenges which are to be collectively addressed by the G20 members to ensure resilient infrastructure investments.

Key experts from leading institutions both from government, development banks and private sectors participated in the side event.

The side event “Financing Risk Prevention: Round Table with Private Sectors on Financing Disaster Risk Reduction” held on 24 March addressed the importance of finance and public-private partnership.

The roundtable which saw participation form financiers, developers, government, academia, and International Organizations. The distinguished speakers deliberated on innovative strategies for leveraging private sector financing and knowledge resources. The critical questions addressed included making private sector investments in DRI more attractive, ways to enhance public-private partnership to monetize resilience benefits and leverage best capabilities, effectively navigating evolving risk landscape & maintaining transparency, and encouraging inclusion of risk reduction and resilience metrics in business models.

Insights from the G-20 DRR Working Group meeting are expected to foster a broader understanding and incentivize action towards disaster risk reduction (DRR) and disaster resilient infrastructure (DRI).  

3rd Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group Meeting, Chennai, 23 – 26 July 2023

CDRI organized two side events on the second day:

The side event on Capturing the Resilience Dividend Towards Closing the Infrastructure Gap brought together experts from the national and state governments, international organizations, and institutional investor to discuss pathways for creating a conducive policy ecosystem enabled by legal, regulatory, and disclosure frameworks to attract investments; the new GIRI model; and the integration of national resilience strategies and plans to create robust project pipelines.

The side event on Enhancing Disaster Resilient Infrastructure Governance saw deliberations on:

  • The challenges of SIDS, LDCs and LLDCs for strengthening infrastructure resilience and incorporate feedback into the development of the methodology for the review of infrastructure resilience governance [complements with one of the key focus areas of Infrastructure for Resilient Island States’ (IRIS) ‘Risk informed policy and planning’ where the objective is to strengthen institutional and regulatory structures and improve riskinformed decision-making for enhancing resilience of infrastructure in SIDS].
  • Showcase good practices and lessons to inform policies, strategies, regulatory frameworks and governance mechanisms for improving infrastructure resilience and facilitate cross learning.
