Project name: Inception of a Global Tsunami Evacuation Model (GTEM) for Practitioners at Local Governments in Tsunami-Prone Areas
An open-source, user-friendly tsunami evacuation tool is being developed to support local governments and communities in disaster preparedness.
It simulates realistic scenarios by integrating dynamic factors like traffic congestion, crowd behaviour, and population movement.
Co-designed with planners from Japan, Peru, and other countries, the tool enhances evacuation strategies, strengthens community safety, and builds resilience in tsunami-prone areas, empowering stakeholders with data-driven insights and globally informed planning capabilities.

Impact et résultats clés
1
The tool empowers local governments to model realistic tsunami evacuations, detect critical bottlenecks, and optimize escape routes using data on traffic, crowd behaviour, and population flow, boosting both the speed and success of emergency response.
2
Tailored for local needs, the GTEM platform provides advanced disaster planning tools, empowering under-resourced communities to make informed decisions, boosting preparedness, optimizing response strategies, and strengthening resilience in vulnerable urban environments.
3
By combining scenario modelling with local engagement, the tool enables municipalities to craft evidence-based evacuation plans, enhancing operational efficiency, reducing casualties, and strengthening emergency response through informed, community-centered decision-making.
